Complete Bra Guide: What is a Shelf Bra and the advantages ?
What is a shelf Bra ?
Shelf bra refers to a thick elastic band that supports under the breasts however doesn't cover the nipple. this kind of bra is also used in lingerie sets. a lot of commonly we see the term shelf bra used to describe a variety of built in bras in clothes where wearing a bra would be tough because of thin straps.
Its function is to lift the breasts up and provide some form of support. It may serves 2 real functions:
- Lifts the breasts, making them look full and firm under a sweater or such (make sure that you are properly fitted if well endowed to get the support you need)
- Makes the nipples prominent under clothing
The advantages of a Shelf Bra
The built-in shelf bra offers extra comfort and/or support
The built-in shelf bra is an extra layer of cloth inside a sando or tank top, ending in elastic so it can fit under your breasts. If the material of your shirt is thick enough, you can easily use it outside for more comfort. The elastic is not as constricting as an underwire, and the extra layer of cloth is usually thin.
On the other hand, if you’re planning to use it for running or sports, you can easily wear it over a normal bra for more support. It can even be used over a sports bra to give you more comfort during a game or a run.
The cup-less shelf bra offers utility and intimacy
Lingerie does not always have to be functional and useful. Some days you just want to look good and feel good. Some days you just want to add to your bedroom wear. What you need is the shelf bra.
The shelf bra is designed to go under the breasts and support them, without providing coverage. Most ladies prefer using them in the intimacy of a home or bedroom, as they are easily seen under most tops. They can provide the comfort of support and a braless feel all at once. You can even use them with the built-in shelf bra for added support but the same level of comfort.
Shelf bras work best for women with cup sizes A to C, for the best support. Find one with non-elastic bands and uses multiple hooks to close for ideal support.
Why would you wear a Shelf Bra ?
Shelf bras have an underwire, but a very small lower cup that does not cover the nipple.
Good style for:
- Firm and self-supporting breasts.
- Breast sizes smaller than a D cup.
- Looking braless while having some support.
Not so good for:
- Settling and pendulous breasts.
- Large breasts needing support.
This bra style can also be called a “chopper bra.” Apart from being extremely titillating to men, smaller breasted women can wear shelf bras in place of a bra if they want a “natural” look, but without the sagging. If you want to go braless, but secretly wish you had some support, a shelf bra is the answer.
A shelf bra is also the name given to an additional piece of fabric with elastic sewn along the lower edge that is then sewn inside a top for additional breast support. This added fabric acts like a sling to give your breasts added support.
