Complete Bra Guide: What is the difference between an underwire, shelf bra and moulded cups.
What is a shelf Bra ?
Shelf bra is a type of bra that usually does not (or can barely) cover the nipples or the upper portion of the breasts. Its function is to lift the breasts up and provide some form of support. It may serves 2 real functions:
- Lifts the breasts, making them look full and firm under a sweater or such (make sure that you are properly fitted if well endowed to get the support you need)
- Makes the nipples prominent under clothing

Ever wonder what the difference is between all the different bust support available? We’ve made it easy for you and explained all the different options available below:
What does Underwire Bra mean ?Underwire Bra- An underwire bra has a thin rigid piece of metal, plastic or resin sewn into the underside of the cup of the bra. The purpose of the underwire is to provide additional support for the breasts. Underwire provides shaping and support, pushing the volume of the breast in an upwards and out direction. What does Shelf Bra mean ?
Shelf Bra- A shelf bra is a type of bra that supports the lower part of the breasts, equipped with an elastic band at the base to lift breasts up. Shelf bras are also known as ‘built-in bras’ and can be commonly found in camisoles, tank tops, and swimwear of course.
What does moulded Swimsuit mean ?
Moulded Cup- Moulded cups are generally seamless, giving you a natural, rounded shape and sometimes have padding to prevent your nipple from coming through the material. Moulded cup bras are commonly found in sport bra styles, nursing bras and Tshirt bras including many of our swimsuit choices.
The advantages of a Shelf Bra
The built-in shelf bra offers extra comfort and/or support
The built-in shelf bra is an extra layer of cloth inside a sando or tank top, ending in elastic so it can fit under your breasts. If the material of your shirt is thick enough, you can easily use it outside for more comfort. The elastic is not as constricting as an underwire, and the extra layer of cloth is usually thin.
On the other hand, if you’re planning to use it for running or sports, you can easily wear it over a normal bra for more support. It can even be used over a sports bra to give you more comfort during a game or a run.
The cup-less shelf bra offers utility and intimacy
Lingerie does not always have to be functional and useful. Some days you just want to look good and feel good. Some days you just want to add to your bedroom wear. What you need is the shelf bra.
The shelf bra is designed to go under the breasts and support them, without providing coverage. Most ladies prefer using them in the intimacy of a home or bedroom, as they are easily seen under most tops. They can provide the comfort of support and a braless feel all at once. You can even use them with the built-in shelf bra for added support but the same level of comfort.
Shelf bras work best for women with cup sizes A to C, for the best support. Find one with non-elastic bands and uses multiple hooks to close for ideal support.
